The medical term for bed wetting when a child is over six years old is enuresis. Actually the condition is not confined to night time hours it can happen at any time but most commonly occurs after the child has gone to bed. Enuresis treatment for this is pretty simple and involves behavior training or drugs or a combination of both.

The problem is parents often take no action thinking the child will simply figure out a solution themselves. Worse yet are those parents who punish a child for bed wetting. Of course neither one of these approaches addresses the problem of enuresis and do nothing for the kid except leaving him or her feeling like they have done something wrong.

Parents however, can play an important part in ending this problem simply by controlling bathroom times and the amount of liquid a child consumes. Make sure they use the bathroom before going to bed and limit liquids during the evening with no liquids at least two hours before bedtime. This enuresis treatment works best when the child is between six and eight.

If behavior modification doesn't work, bed wetting alarms might. These are small alarms that go off in the night waking the child and reminding them to go to the bathroom. If used consistently and properly the alarms can do their own form of behavior modification and get the child back on track after a couple of months.

Drugs are also an option. Some medications are designed to reduce the amount of urine that the body produces while sleeping. This reduces the pressure on the bladder and allows for a dry night. A common practice for physicians is to place the child on medication, take him or her off it to see if they are staying dry by themselves, and then putting them back on if they are not.

Bed wetting doesn't have to be a childhood nightmare. There are enuresis treatments to deal with it. Just take the time to learn what's available and then take action.
